Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed the worst case scenario with Giovanni Leoni’s injury.
The talented Italian defender joined Liverpool this summer and was hit by the injury after winning the Carabao Cup this week at Southampton.
Leoni had to be stretched in that game and slots talked about the extent of his injuries.
See below as journalist Ben Jacobs reported on Slot’s press conference comments about Leoni’s injuries this morning…
Jacobs said: “Arne Slot confirms Giovanni Leoni has an ACL injury after stretching and contracting with Southampton in his debut.” That’s not good. He’ll go out for up to a year. “Federico Chiesa will be included in Liverpool #ucl squad. It was a tough break for 18-year-old Leoni, who was relieved after his debut. ”
Liverpool young Giovanni Leoni hits big
This is extremely unlucky for Leoni. Leoni looks like a promising young talent who can still have a big future at Anfield if he returns well from this injury.
Reds fans wish him the best in his recovery, but that would be very frustrating for them too.
Leoni seemed to provide a good cover for Liverpool behind the likes of Virgil van Dick and Ibrahima Conate, but that option has now come this season.
Joe Gomez is still in the LFC and can give the slot to another option behind, but it’s hard to imagine it would be enough for the long, challenging campaign course where the club hopes to compete in four competitions.
