Gary McCoy was named one of the riders involved in Wednesday’s serious Northwest 200 crash, with Ulsterman confirming he is coming out of the rest of the event.
The 2025 Northwest 200 began on Wednesday along with the opening day of qualifying, but was heavily influenced by the three red flags.
Two long stops were forced due to separate oil spills in the superbike session. An on-track incident early in the Supersport outing was forced before it led to another red flag.
Two riders were involved, the other was taken on the road to the hospital and the other was airlifted.
The former is confirmed as McCoy, who says he was attacked from behind at Mill Road, and his injuries will miss the rest of his TT debut.
“I just thought I would give everyone a simple update because I had a lot of kind messages and a lot of wishes,” he said on Facebook.
“Yesterday afternoon I was involved in a crash that completely escaped from my control when the rider behind me lost control of his car and ended me with an approach to Mill Road’s roundabout.
“Unfortunately, this will dominate me from further races this year at the NW200 and my debut as a rookie at Isle of Man TT.
“We would like to thank you all for your help and support. We hope that other riders will bring about a quick recovery.”
The organizers have yet to formally name both riders involved in the incident, but BBC Sports reports that the second was Craig Neve.
Neve is believed to have been seriously injured, but it is not life-threatening.
Organizers issued the statement Wednesday evening.
“Both riders were injured in the incident and medical teams on the course were on the scene.
“The riders were then transferred to the hospital, one by ambulance and the other by ambulance.”
The North West 200 qualifying will continue on Thursday morning, before tonight’s first race takes place.
Slightly tweaked for the scheduled qualifying, Super Twin and Superstock bikes bumped into orders as they didn’t have time on Wednesday due to a stop.
Peter Hickman was a completely fast rider on the 8ten Racing BMW on Wednesday.
