Richard Munsell sank a birdie on the final hole, winning the Singapore Classic on Sunday, winning his first DP World Tour title in his 104th attempt, beating Nakajima on one stroke.
The British man Munsell had a 6-under 66 card in the third and final round, finishing 16 under overall. Nakajima performed unharmedly on seven birdies to finish at 15 under, with Adrian Sadie and Tom McKibbin tied him for third place at 14 under.
“God, I hope it came soon,” the emotional Munsell said when asked about waiting for a long time for the title. “What a pleasant feeling… It’s worth it when you make mistakes near them and go ahead of yourself in the past, and that just means more.”
American Dan Erickson took a one-shot lead on the final day after the tournament was reduced to 54 holes after a washout on Thursday. Erickson fell to the tie in sixth place when he hit two birdies and a bogey in the third round.
The 29-year-old Munsell hit five birdies in a row before a bogey on the 10th, but offset it on the 13th with another birdie. He was leveled with Nakajima entering the 18th hole, where he finished with an epic two-putt birdie over 100 feet.
“So many people supported me and believed in me when I quit myself,” said Munsell, who was in tears when his wife Ellie won. “One of the things I say to people trying to do it as a career is that the moment is the most fulfilling thing in the world and it is worth it.
Munsell leaves with a prize of around $425,000.
