Colby Covington is pleased to see Tony Ferguson get his first combat sport victory in over six years, but that doesn’t mean he should continue fighting.
Ferguson won Salt Papi in Misfits Boxing 22 last Saturday with a three-round TKO. After losing the first two rounds, Ferguson gave Papi a gust of punches. Papi seemed to be properly protecting himself before the judge stepped in and stopped the fight.
Now that Ferguson has raised his hand again, Covington feels he should now call it a winning career,
“Happy for him,” Covington said on his YouTube channel. “Congratulations to Tony for actually winning the battle. A victory won against influencers who have no experience in combat sports.
“My advice to Tony is to quit while you’re in front of you, while you’re on the sunset. Enjoy your time with your family, your siblings. If you’re back there again, you’ll be hurt, and you don’t want to see you get hurt.
Ferguson has stopped eight consecutive losses, including losses to Justin Gettege, Charles Oliveira, Paddy Pinblett, Michael Chandler and Nate Diaz. Doctor halt TKO’s victory over Donald Serone at UFC 238 in June 2019 was the recent victory of the interim lightweight champion this past Saturday.
Covington and Ferguson have developed a strange relationship – including eccentric exchanges at a pre-UFC 296 match press conference.
“I think we’re friends, I don’t know that it went so many different ways,” Covington said. “We were friends, we were enemies, we were friends. And we were enemies again. But Team USA, brothers.”
