Manchester United are preparing to face Liverpool in the Premier League in one of the biggest games of the season.
There are widespread concerns that one of United’s main stars is underperforming, leading to criticism that Liverpool’s intensity and high-pressure games could expose him.
While Liverpool have been better than United in recent history, their current form is worrying and perhaps Ruben Amorim and his team can take advantage of that.
However, a concern for United is the form of left-back Luke Shaw, who could be exposed to Liverpool’s pace and energy, according to former Red Devil Paul Parker.
Manchester United star Luke Shaw receives criticism
Parker believes Shaw could be the weakest link between United and Liverpool in Sunday’s high-profile Premier League clash.
Shaw, who has started every league game this season for Amorim’s side, has faced his biggest challenge so far this season, often struggling with pace and concentration, and coming up against the likes of Mohamed Salah.
“If you look at the teams they played against, they can’t handle the pace and the energy level.” Parker told the podcast “The Devils’ Advocate.”
“It would be great if Liverpool could play in front of them, but I don’t think they will. I think they will try to turn things around, especially with Luke Shaw on the left.
“Salah is going to run in behind, whether he has the ball or not, knowing how lazy Luke Shaw is, knowing that he’s always tugging at his shirt and little things like that.
“They don’t have the discipline and reliable personnel to play for what the coach wants.
“You can moan about his system all you want, but at the end of the day, they want to use the word elite with today’s players. It’s totally bullshit to be honest, but if they were that elite, they’d be smart enough to go for it.”
Shaw will have to deal with Mo Salah
Shaw is often the weak link in United’s defence, and against a team like Liverpool who prefer to attack from wide positions and rely heavily on Salah, he will need to be at his best to defend properly and survive the onslaught.
Arne Slott’s side, who have lost their last two Premier League games, will be looking to make a statement to their rivals and get back to winning ways.
Shaw will also need support from his wide players in defence, but he cannot be left alone to deal with Salah’s threat.
