Sahith Theegala has withdrawn from this week’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow due to a neck injury, tournament officials said Wednesday.
Due to the same illness, Theegala withdrew from the Truist Championship on Sunday. He held that signing event in rounds of 69 and 71, falling to the final spot on the field on Saturday with 8 over 78. After an opening birdie in the third round, Tegala had cards before retracting four bogeys, double bogeys and triple bogeys.
Ranked 31st in the world, Theegala missed one cut on the PGA Tour this season, but has struggled to log only one top 20 finish in individual events (T-17, Genesis).
His exit leaves the PGA field and leaves 98 of the world’s top 100 players. Billy Horschel had to withdraw last week to undergo hip surgery.
Alex Smarley replaced Tegala in this week’s field. The second major of the season begins Thursday in Charlotte, North Carolina
