Legendary Indian opener Sunil Gabascal feels that Shreiyas Ayer has not gained enough credibility after KKR’s 2024 IPL title victory last year. Gavaskar feels Iyer is more fitting, as the captain suggests.
Shreiyas Iyer led the Kolkata Knight Rider to a title victory at IPL 2024. However, he decided not to be held by the KKR, but to enter the mega auction and was eventually signed by the Punjab King for a number of cups of 26.75 crores.

While commentating during the match between the Lucknow Super Giants and the Punjab Kings at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, Sunilgavaskar made a poignant statement that Shreiyasaire was unable to give enough credibility to KKR’s victory despite his excellent captain record in 2024.
“Schreyers is the captain of the KKR side, who won the IPL 2024, and I believe he didn’t get the credibility he deserves. His captain’s record is very impressive.”
Iyer played a key role as batsman and captain in KKR’s victory last year. The right-handed played no. His leadership skills were also impressive among the knocks he won in the mid-order match.
His friendship between the team’s head coach Chandrakant Pandit and Gautam Ganbir at the time worked perfectly for the franchise as KKR produced a completely dominant performance.
Shreeyas Iyer is in a great shape
Shreiyas Iyer was signed by the Punjab Kings at Mega Auction and was also appointed captain of the team. Punjab is one of the few teams that have not won the trophy as they have high expectations for Iyer this time.
He showed excellent batting form in both games he played so far. In his first match, he scored 97 with just 42 balls off in a high-score game against the home team Gujarat Titans at Ahmedabad.
Iyer is no. Attacked 5 Fours and 9 Sixes while knocking at 3. The right-hander didn’t stop here, beating another half century in the next game. He scored 52 out of just 30 balls with three fours and four sixes.
Iyer has scored 149 runs in two games so far. He scored these runs at a strike rate of 206.94 and is looking in great form. Iyer is expected to lead his team from the forefront in future matches.
The King of Punjab is in a wonderful shape
The Punjab Kings have taken an excellent shape as they have registered victory in both games they have played so far. They changed the team and coaching staff ahead of this season, and this move appears to have worked for them so far. Currently they are in the second spot on the points table.
Apart from Iyer, younger batsmen like Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and Nehal Wadhera also show great promises. Using the ball, Arshdeep Singh looked amazing, but Rocky Ferguson added a new dimension to this offense.
