Man United are preparing for a busy summer transfer window as they are trying to bolster their team before next season.
Among the potential targets, unexpected names are emerging – their former academy alumni, Angel Gomez, is ready for a dramatic return to Old Trafford.
Ben Jacobs refuses to rule out the man signing Angel Gomez
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Manchester United should not be ruled out as a potential destination for the 24-year-old offensive midfielder.
Gomez, who is in the final year of his contract with Lille, is expected to transfer the French club for free this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have also expressed interest, but Jacobs suggests that United can push behind the former players.
Speaking to Givemesport, he said:
“I haven’t yet discounted Manchester United’s move to re-sign Gomez, and that might be something to watch too.
“So, I can’t say that the Spurs have run clearly at Gomez yet, but they are one of the clubs that are solidly interested in them.
“And I’d be surprised if West Ham succeeded in their offer despite the relatively favorable finances that West Ham is being offered.”
Tottenham appears to be leading the race to sign Gomez at this point, suggesting that players will be open to the move, even if the Spurs lose their European qualifications next season.
Meanwhile, Gomez has already rejected the offer from the Hammer, so West Ham’s pursuit is reportedly over.
Return to Old Trafford with Angel Gomez card
Gomez first joined Manchester United’s academy at age 6, quickly climbing the ranks and made his senior debut in 2017 at just 16 years old.
He became the club’s youngest Premier League debutant since Duncan Edwards in 1953. However, after struggling with regular first team opportunities, he set out for a free transfer in 2020.
Since leaving United, Gomez rebuilt his French career at Lille, initially being loaned to Beauvista before returning to establish himself on Rig 1.
He played a key role in the mid-reel field, showing his versatility as both an attacking playmaker and a deep midfielder.
However, his progress was hampered this season by injuries and a reduced team role, featuring only 20 times in all competitions, scoring twice and providing one assist.
Over 176 senior appearances from Lille, Boavista and Manchester United, Gomes contributed 41 goals (16 goals and 25 assists).
With Manchester United planning a team overhaul this summer, bringing Gomez back to a free transfer could be a wise move.
The club is aiming to increase dynamism and creativity in the middle, especially as players like Christian Eriksen and Casemiro face an uncertain future at Old Trafford.
Gomez’s versatility could make him a valuable asset, giving him depth to multiple midfield roles. His technical abilities, dribbling skills and eye for passing could complement United’s midfield under Amorim.
