The Oklahoma City Thunder’s recent championship victory sparked dynasty conversations throughout the NBA community.
Many believe they will win for years, due to recent decades of comparisons with the Golden State Warriors, Lakers and Spurs dynasties.
Former players like Demarcus Cousins believe that Thunder The Thunder, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, will build a more powerful dynasty than the Warriors achieved during Stephen Curry’s era. But others like Michael Wilbon have seen obstacles that could limit OKC’s championship window.
NBA insider Tim McMahon recently shared a bold prediction about the Thunder future and Gilgus Alexander’s potential location in basketball history.
McMahon believes that Shy Gilgauss Alexander can reach legendary historical levels like Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
“Is Shay Gilgauss Alexander one of those people? Is he Kobe? Is he Jordan? Is he LeBron? Is he Steph? Is he in a historic company at that level?
“My answer would be yes on both counts,” explained McMahon.
His confidence stems from Gilegeous-Alexander’s recent performance. McMahon believes it has been the biggest season ever produced and has been accumulating historically.
The insider sees multiple factors that support his optimistic predictions, both about Gilgauss Alexander’s individual trajectories and the stability of Thunder’s organization.
McMahon’s discussion focuses on Oklahoma City and has already established the backbone of the championship. Beyond Gilgeous-Alexander, Thunder locked Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren on long-term contracts to secure the core trio.
The organization also owns 10 first round picks projected between 2026 and 2031, providing enormous asset flexibility for trading and pay cap control.
“So, certainly, the season he stacked up with the best from a history standpoint, certainly, and we’ve talked a lot about the CBA’s challenges with lightning, but again, they’ll have the top three guys.
The combination of star talent, cost-controlled role players, and draft assets creates ideal conditions for sustained championship competition.
McMahon has eased expectations while maintaining confidence in the potential for multiple titles over the next few years.
“I’m not saying that Thunder will tear off five of the next seven, etc., but I certainly bet that Thunder will win multiple championships. They’ve already won multiple championships in seven years,” he added.
To reach the historical levels of Kobe, LeBron, Curry, or Jordan, you need extraordinary and sustainable excellence. However, MacMahon believes Gilgeous-Alexander has the individual tools and organizational support it needs to dominate the NBA for years to come.
The Thunder’s Championship window appears to remain open longer than most teams can maintain.
