After a dramatic event this season, the Dallas Mavericks have reason to be optimistic.
Luka Donsic’s stunning departure was just the beginning of the Dallas Mavericks’ problems from 2024-25.
The franchise suffered another major blow when Kyrie Irving fell from an injury in the season-ending ACL, in addition to the injury to newly acquired star Anthony Davis.
Davis ultimately came back to lead the charge, but Mavs ran short to reach the 2025 NBA playoffs.
After miraculously winning the NBA Draft lottery with just 1.8% of the time, the Mavericks have had unexpected optimism since this season.
Losing Doncic is still difficult to handle, but predicting a No. 1 pick that is thought to become another generational talent in Cooper Flag is a turnaround that changes an unrealistic franchise.
While there is still a lot of hostility for general manager Nico Harrison, Dallas Mavericks fans can feel a little more confident about their future. The Flag, Davis and Irving trio have a high ceiling and is the core that most NBA teams want.
Mavs already has many issues to address in preparation for redemption for the 2025-26 season.
Finding and signing point guards will be one of Dallas’ priorities this summer, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
“It’s said that the Mavericks will pursue point guard,” said the NBA insider. “It’s a trade market, and in free agency, that’s a big priority for them because they know that Kyrie Irving might be targeting January.
“So we’ll see which point guard they can have as a plugin player for them.”
After tore his ACL this February, Irving is set to miss the first part of the season. And without him, Mavs really needs a proven temporary floor general who can set up tables and promote attacks.
Averaging 11.0 points and 4.0 assists available for service in 79 games, Spencer Din Widdy is not guaranteed to return after reuniting with MAVS on the veteran lowest trading.
After Irving fell, Brandon Williams became an interesting revelation for MAVS, moving ESPN’s Bobby Mark. However, the Mavericks’ plans showed he probably feels he’s not ready to accept the role yet.
Things like Tyus Jones, Malcolm Brogdon, Dennis Schroder and Chris Paul are some of the main serviceable point guards to watch in the 2025 offseason market, and Mavs need to be offensive to win one of them.
