Sheffield United will need a big end to the season and a little help from other teams to secure automatic promotions from the championship.
The Blades are currently Burnley’s five-point drift, something they still have to play, with Leeds having four games left before the end of the campaign.
Chris Wilder’s team lost the final three championship games, only scoring one goal in between. This must be particularly frustrating after spending cash on a new centre forward during the January transfer period.
How much did Sheffield United pay Tom Cannon?
Athletic reported that Sheffield United agreed to a £10 million fee to sign Tom Cannon from Leicester City earlier this year, increasing its attack options.
They moved from behind a nine-goal return in 22 championship matches on loan at Stoke City in the first half of the season.
Unfortunately, Cannon couldn’t hit the ground running in Bramal Lane, not boosting their potential for promotion that his supporters might have hoped he was at the time of his big money move.
The 22-year-old attacker has failed to score in previous 12 Blade league matches, registering one assist at that point.
£10 million was a big spend as it was heading towards the centre at the championship level. So there should be more to be expected from him.
Why Choi Adams is better at miles than Tom Cannon
Blade sold Adams to Birmingham for a £2 million price reported in the summer of 2016 after scoring 15 goals in the club’s 55 first team matches.
After scoring 38 goals in 123 games for the Blues, the British-born centre-forward signed Southampton in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £15 million.
After a few seasons in the Saints and Premier League, Adams returned to last season’s championship and thrived in the second tier before moving to Turin in the Serie last summer.

As you can see from the table above, Scotland International was prolific for Southampton last season, bringing an impressive finish to Italy, surpassing XG with almost two goals in Serie A.
These statistics show that Adams is a reliable clinical advancement in front of goals in one of the major European leagues, but Cannon is currently goalless in Sheffield United’s 12 games.
So Turin’s frontman is now much more effective than blade number 9, as he is currently thriving in the top European leagues. Ireland International cannot score in the championship.

Sheffield United once sold the attacker for a fee of just £2 million, but it is still unclear whether their £10 million signature will reach the height that Scottish dynamos have hit in his career.
