On Monday, October 21, West Indies created history in the second of their three-match series against Bangladesh at the Sher-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. Remarkably, Roston Chase’s side became the first team to hit 50 consecutive spin-overs in a One Day International match.
West Indies relied solely on their spin bowlers throughout the innings. All-round pacer Justin Greaves was the only pace option in the lineup, but was not used. The spinners performed well on another lackluster pitch, requiring no pace support and limiting the home side to 213 for 7 in 50 overs.
West Indies create history by bowling all 50 overs against spinners in ODI innings
Bangladesh scored 213 against a spin-heavy West Indies attack in Dhaka despite losing seven wickets in 50 overs. Leading batsman Sowmya Sarkar top-scored with 45, but lower order batsman Rishad Hossain dominated the final stages with an unbeaten 39 off 14 balls (including three sixes and many fours).

Rishad added an unbroken 50-run eight-wicket partnership with Bangladesh captain Mehdi Hasan Miraz, scoring an unbeaten 32 runs in 58 balls with one boundary. The most successful player for the West Indies was Gudakesh Motier, who took three wickets but conceded 65 runs.
Aqeel Hossain and Arik Athanadze took two wickets each. Rishad’s innings helped Bangladesh post a competitive total. Meanwhile, West Indies broke the record for most overs bowled by spinners alone in an ODI innings, surpassing the record of 44 overs bowled by Sri Lanka against Australia in 2004.

Bangladesh struggle early but finish well on cracked Dhaka pitch
Dhaka’s pitch once again challenged the batsmen. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first. Sowmya Sarkar hit a few boundaries early on and Saif Hassan briefly threatened a six before being dismissed by Aqeel Hossain.
Twahid Hridoy and Najmul Hossain Shanto struggled and fell cheaply to Athanadze, leaving Bangladesh at 96 for 4 after 28 overs. Mahidul Islam tried to accelerate but was unable to rotate the strike effectively and ended up with 17 layoffs.
Sarkar played 89 balls, smashing three fours and a six and departed in the 31st over. Bangladesh then collapsed to 128 for 6. Mehdi Hasan Miraz and Nurul Hasan added 35 runs. Nurul scored 23 points off 24 balls, including two fours and one six. Bangladesh ended up posting a competitive total.
The ODI that follows in Dhaka will be crucial for West Indies as they look to bounce back from their loss to Bangladesh by 74 runs in the first match on October 18. A win is essential for the visiting nation to survive in the series.
