Tottenham Hotspur defender Christian Romero is currently one of the hottest items in the transfer market, and he continues to link with Atletico Madrid.
The Spanish club is about to sign the player, and trustworthy journalist Ruben Ulia has revealed that the two clubs are in discussions to get the deal done. The 27-year-old is excellent for Tottenham and should prove to be a quality acquisition of Atletico Madrid if he can get the deal done.
Ulia revealed (h/t esto es atleti): “The Tottenham sources confirmed they were talking to Atletico de Madrid about Cati Romero. It was confirmed.”
Atletico Madrid needs Christian Romero
The team will need to improve next season to compete with Barcelona and Real Madrid and others. Signing world-class defenders certainly helps them improve. The 27-year-old helped his country win the major trophies and helped Tottenham win the UEFA Europa League last season.
There is no doubt that he can make a decisive contribution at Atletico Madrid as well. Meanwhile, the player is ready to take the next step in his career and join a bigger club. He has proven himself at Tottenham, and this may be the right time for him to take on new challenges. Tottenham has exciting projects, but not at the level necessary to drive the league title or Champions League. It will be interesting to see if Romero can win a major trophy at the Spanish club.
Can the Spurs replace him?
Losing a player of his quality is a blow to Tottenham, but they could potentially recover a significant amount from his departure. It will be interesting to see if they can bring high quality alternatives.
