Tottenham Hotspur’s Daniel Levy era is a roller coaster, encapsulated by the long-standing mediocrity of the pitch, as well as trade from the pitch.
Their recruitment is getting better, but they prepare for the future, especially by bringing Archie Gray, Lucas Bergval and highly rated defender Luka Voskovic to the club, but they’re still wasting hundreds of millions of players on players who just haven’t cut it.
In recent years, we’ve been talking about Richarison, £60 million, Yves Bizma, £25 million, Emerson Royal, and £55 million, Giovani Roe Celso.
But one of the worst was the movement of the unlucky Tangai Ndambele.
Why was the Ndombele’s Spurs’ movement a disaster?
The year was 2019 and the month was July. It was a summer window and Levi knew he had to spend on taking Spurs to the next level.
What he did was Ndombele cost a club record fee at £55 million. The French arrived from Lyon and some suggested that he was the replacement of the much-loved dream of Musadembele.
I understand why this comparison was made. Ndombele was a strong career, his technical abilities were first class and could have an impact on the games of both boxes.
He moved from League 1, where he scored three goals, and provided eight assists in the 2018/19 campaign. However, the French concluded in the seventh time – but they never replicated those numbers in Spurs’ white.
In fact, on the club’s 91 outings, he gathered nine assists and scored 10 goals. He wasn’t explicitly signed to contribute in the final third, but due to the price tag and hype, you’ll expect better.
So why didn’t it work? Well, he not only suffers from injuries, but he missed some games through the gro caliber issue, but he wasn’t particularly working hard. That was the view of many people, mainly Jose Mourinho.
“We had to start with him as a no-10,” the former Spurs boss explained. “He didn’t have the discipline, strength or stamina to become a midfielder.”

One training ground source is fully encapsulated. Speaking to the athletic, they said at the time: “Tangie is a team heretic and he can do things no one else can do. An incredibly talented and incredible ability.
Well, he finally left England after actually making the grade in North London when his contract was cancelled in June 2024.

Spurs have not done anything great in the market since then. This is represented by Timo Werner’s movements.
Spurs’ worst signature since Ndombele
Something like Richarlison, Lo Celso, and Bissouma – all signed since Ndombele – doesn’t exactly set the world, but at least makes a positive contribution.
The Brazilian scored 12 goals in all competitions in the previous term, but Lo Celso won the net against Manchester City in 2023/24, playing a key role in the team throughout the midstage of Ange Postecoglou’s debut year.
But for Werner, he had no many memorable moments at all. The Ndombele is certainly the worst bunch, but the Germans floped in a similar way.
Of course, it’s a loan move, so there’s no cash wasted here, but if something is wasted, it’s time and effort to trade through the line.
The former Chelsea attacker initially signed loans in January 2024, scoring twice on the backend that season, supplying three assists on 13 outings.
As a result, his loan move in the UK was extended over the summer, keeping him at the club until the end of the current campaign. Sadly, it was just worthless.
The £165,000 per week earner has only won one campaign (Carabao Cup goal) and has three assists in the Premier League.
The lowest point of his time at the club was undoubtedly facing Tamworth in the FA Cup in January. The Spurs are pretty much lost in the game, and Werner is notably surprised that podcasters and content creator Will Rayner suggested that “he looks comfortable with the worst players on the pitch against the non-league side.” Really terrible words.
He’s not just annoyed supporters, but he’s also annoyed by Postcoglo, who appeared in Germany International in December after his performance against the Rangers, suggesting that his performance is “unacceptable.” Ange, please tell us how you really feel.
Also, it is said to be a “strange” signature by ESPN critic Don Hutchinson, but is it really a surprise to be handed over the option to buy a 29 year old at the end of his loan this summer?
It was reported that Levy could exercise his £8.5 million purchase option, but it has been suggested that he will return to RB Leipzig in the summer.
That’s certainly the right decision for a player who flops as hard as Ndombele did with the colours of Spurs.
