The NBA world was on fire when the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis.
Many still wonder about this trade and why the Dallas Mavericks made it happen. Luka Doncic is a top-five player in the NBA, but Anthony Davis seems to be a step behind.
This was on full display in Davis’ season opener against the Mavericks and against the San Antonio Spurs.
Davis was picked on defense all night by Victor Wembaneyama, who had an incredible performance with 40 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Davis needs to get back on track after a disappointing performance against the Spurs.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said that for the Mavericks’ trade of Luka Doncic and Davis to be justified, Davis would have to play like he did when he first arrived in Dallas.
The Mavericks put Davis’ experience on full display last season in his debut against the Houston Rockets, scoring 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks in just 31 minutes.
“He has to be the player he was in the first half with the Dallas Mavericks after being traded (against Houston). He always has to be that player, because that’s what justifies this move.”
“I’m not against Wenbanyama. He’s 7 feet 5 inches tall. But at the same time, you need to see something in your game that shows you’re ready to take up the mantle and you’re ready to handle your job.”
Davis must stay focused and get back on track after a tough season opener.
The Mavericks will next host the Washington Wizards, so this will be a great opportunity for Davis to show off his superiority.
Davis will then have another chance to make a big splash when Dallas takes on the Toronto Raptors.
If the Mavericks want to make some noise without Kyrie Irving this season, they need Davis to be at his best.
