Former Liverpool captain Stephen Gerrard recently became a passionate supporter of the Manchester United legend and made headlines by nameing him as “arguably the best player” he’s played with.
There is weight to the admiration of Gerrard, one of England’s most medal-winning midfielders.
The player was named after former Mann United forward Wayne Rooney, who Gerrard played with for England.
Both Gerrard and Rooney were part of the golden generation of England. Although he was unable to win anything against his home country, he performed very well for the club and made a name for himself in the Premier League.
Stephen Gerrard praises Wayne Rooney
Gerrard has played with some of his generation for the England national team.
Whether Michael Owen, Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry or Ashley Cole, he is part of an English team with stars and believes Rooney was the best he’s played together for the Three Lions.
On the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, he said:
“Wayne Rooney is definitely the best England player I’ve played with. He can do so much… I don’t see Wayne as No. 9 or No. 10. I see him as an all-around attacker. He’s going to be able to take up the back four alone.”
Rooney was a reliable player for England and Manchester United.
Rooney was, like Gerrard said, an all-around attacker. The former United star was able to attack, play in the middle and also handle defensive duties.
He is undoubtedly the most versatile player in recent history to play in the English and Premier League.
Rooney has played in 120 matches and scored 53 goals, which is a very memorable one.
When someone like Gerrard praises you despite playing for United’s biggest rival, Liverpool, it shows how much respect and admiration you have among your former colleagues.
