The Golden State Warriors may need to compete without Stephen Curry in Game 2 of the second round of playoff series against the Minnesota Timber Wolves.
Curry suffered a hamstring injury during the 99-88 victory in Game 1, playing in just 13 minutes, but still contributed 13 points, including three triples.
Following the victory, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr acknowledged that the team previously managed the playoff games without Stephen Curry in 2016 and 2018, but the situation presents a variety of challenges.
Kerr pointed to a harsh contrast in the composition of the roster compared to previous seasons. “The difference is that we all had an NBA roster, so at the time it was well equipped to handle Steph’s loss,” Kerr explained.
During these previous playoff runs, the Warriors boasted a lineup featuring multiple All-Stars, including Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and Andrei Ghdara, offering reliable backup point guard Shaun Livingston a steady minutes when Curry was put aside.
Despite concerns, Kerr expressed confidence in his current team, highlighting how he maintained control throughout most of Game 1 without superstar point guard.
The team was connected with 15 3-pointers, even for a limited few minutes of curry. The Warriors also made 18 offensive rebounds that helped the Warriors survive the night.
“But there are lessons where you need to understand what it takes to win the game without your best players, and tonight was a good sign,” Kerr pointed out.
Kerr specifically praised the leadership presented by Draymond Green, Kevon Rooney and Jimmy Butler.
“Draymond, Rune and Jimmy showed leadership with the bystanders, spoke with the guys and acknowledged the fight,” Kerr said.
When the Warriors are preparing for Game 2, if they want to take a 2-0 lead without the franchise’s cornerstone, they will need that veteran presence more than ever.
