Sullivan Corey recorded a spectacular upset against Phil Davis at the PFL World Tournament in Chicago on Saturday night.
Corey tried to push the pace in the opening round, but that only gave Davis the opportunity to make him muscular on the mat. Cauley eventually returned, but was almost clipped on a high kick of separation.
Unfortunately for Kowley, secondly, things didn’t get much better for him. After coming into a takedown attempt from Davis, Corey fell on a troublesome knee to the open fence near his right eye. For a minute to enter the round, Davis retreated, took a deep breath, then ate a head kick from the connected curly.
After realising that Davis had made a compromise, Corey quickly swarmed, swarming with his booming right hand, sending former UFC fighters to the mat. Corey moved in search of a finish, but Davis survived the onslaught, nearly choking his naked choke before the second stanza approached the end.
Corey raised his head to the third as the fight could be tied down, but that prompted Davis to return to wrestling and took Corey to the canvas near the halfway point of the round. However, Cauley quickly returned and separated.
It seemed Davis was struggling, so Corey tried to push the pace, but often found himself tied down by his opponent. Kowley tried to put together one last gust of wind, but was unable to remove a clean shot before the final bell.
