According to reports from France, Sunderland took part in the race to sign a Premier League defender who appears to be about to leave his current club this summer.
The Black Cats have already brought in two new players since the Championship Playoff Final, with Habibdiara and Noah Sadiki joining the Regis Lubris team, while Kem Sintalbi and Rindmandava set to be confirmed immediately.
Wearsiders can try to complement these arrivals with potential additions to add World Cup semi-finals with top-flight experience in English.
Sunderland enters the Nayef Aguerd Transfer Race
French outlet foot mercart reported that Sunderland took part in the race to sign Nayef Aguerd. The West Ham defender also wanted Real Sociedad (where he spent last season on loan), Roma and AC Milan.
It remains to be seen whether the Irons are willing to sell him to fellow Premier League clubs, but Moroccan International’s days at London Stadium appear to be numbered.
Hammers News backed up claims from elsewhere that the 29-year-old asked not to return to the capital club for the preseason.
Aguerd offers Sunderland a multipurpose and experienced defensive option
As Aguerdo appears to be eager to find a way out of West Ham, did Sunderland dodge some suitors in mainland Europe to keep him in England?
The Moroccans will bring valuable Premier League experience to the positions their products lacks among current Black Cat teams, and his ability to play at left back will certainly be appreciated by Lubry.
His time in East London was not the happiest, but he showed last season at Real Sociedad that he was “an extraordinary centre-back who can play in many tactical styles” and “breaking the line while still being comfortable with the ball.”
Aguerd may simply need a fresh start this summer, and his apparent enthusiasm to leave West Ham (and his age) should encourage the possibility that he will be signed at a modest fee.
This may be for loyal wearsides to watch out for the next few days and weeks…
