Following their long-awaited return to the Premier League, Sunderland are reportedly planning an ambitious move to sign one of Serie A’s hottest midfielders, Franck Zambo Anguissa from Napoli.
The newly-promoted Black Cats are looking to shore up their squad with top-class talent and see the Cameroon international as a worthy addition who will bring both experience and strength to their midfield.
However, despite the club’s determination and Anguissa’s openness to a new challenge, the transfer fell through as Napoli manager Antonio Conte intervened directly to block the deal.
Sunderland were ambitious in the summer transfer window
In their first transfer window back in the Premier League, Sunderland’s recruitment strategy was bold. The club aimed to retain talented players who could not only keep the team afloat, but also establish it as a competitive top team.
Sunderland have identified Granit Xhaka and former Fulham midfielder Anguissa as two of their main targets, with both midfielders having leadership qualities and experience in Europe’s elite competition.
Their interest in Anguissa has been described as “very specific”, with reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano admitting Sunderland’s approach goes beyond mere investigation.
The negotiations were considered with real intent, and there was a momentary sense of optimism about potential moves.
Sunderland’s offer was attractive and Anguissa was also interested, but the deciding factor was that manager Antonio Conte refused to sanction the move.
Antonio Conte blocks Anguissa’s move to the Premier League
Conte’s attitude effectively ended Sunderland’s hopes. Under his leadership, Napoli made it clear that they would not put the midfielder up for sale under any circumstances, regardless of financial offers.
The club’s hierarchy had already shown ambition in the market, hoping that by attracting established international players they could set the tone for a return to England’s top division.
If anything, the setback forced Sunderland to reassess their options and redirect their efforts towards more achievable goals.
While they may have missed out on a world-class talent this time around, Anguissa’s signing shows the club are not afraid to dream big, and that attitude could determine their long-term trajectory in the Premier League.
A popular pundit would rather have the Sunderland star in his squad than sign for Newcastle.
