Both Tatiana Suarez and Patchy Mix find themselves in unfamiliar territory.
One of the sports power couples is both scheduled to compete in the octagon for the second time this year, with Suarez preparing to face past strawweight title challenger Amanda Lemos this Saturday at Noche UFC. This fight serves as Suarez’s first appearance since losing a dominant decision to Zhang Weili at UFC 312, the only championship opportunity to date.
Meanwhile, Mix lost his decision to Mario Bautista in his UFC debut following a long reign as Bellator champion at UFC 316 in June, and will face former KSW champion Jakub Wickratz at UFC 320 in October. Suarez responded to seeing his partner in crime as fans get the opportunity to throw shade in the direction.
“To be honest, we were able to give two shits about what people think,” Suarez told the MMA fight. “But for me, it’s just funny because they couldn’t get a true patchy mix, and they’re going to go on October 4th, and I’m very excited that it happens because he sees how exciting everyone is and how exciting he is.
“I’m cool because I can see him train every day, so I’m just watching him become a better martial artist, choosing everyone’s brains and learning more and more every day. We’re here in San Antonio, but Pat can train with the guys on the B team and picking his brains about Jiu-Jitsu stuff. Better and it’s going to be the best version of himself.
Suarez took part in the battle with Chan as a popular option to leave the event as a champion, but that didn’t happen. After a slow start, Chang took over the final four rounds and held the title, which turned out to be his final title defense at 115 pounds. Zhang will now move across the division to challenge UFC 322 flyweight belt Valentina Shevchenko in November.
Despite the losses, Suarez was pleased with his experience with Zhang. She’s not surprised that Zhang made the move, but she hopes Suarez gets the chance to run it with the greatest of all time.
“Overall, I’ve just gained experience there. I’ve had more cage time and more experience. So I’m going to be a better fighter,” Suarez explained. “And now I am focusing on Saturday and looking forward to getting a victory on Saturday.
“So, I think this obviously catapults me in the right direction and gets another title shot. And I want to fight Zhang Weili. So if she wins, I don’t know what will happen. Also.”
In UFC 321, the new strawweight champion will be crowned as Virna Jandiroba, the No. 1 contender, faced Mackenzie Dern in the rematch. Dahn won a unanimous decision victory over Jandirova in his first encounter in 2020.
Suarez says she has definitely shifted gear to a vacant title fight, but that’s not her current path.
No matter how long it takes, Suarez promises that she will fight for the world title again.
“I mean, I was happy to (fight) Verna for the (vacant title), but I don’t care what’s happening either,” Suarez explained. I get another win and win the title. Or, if I had to fight two more, I really don’t care. I just want to stay busy and continue my journey to becoming a champion. That’s all. I don’t care how much (the battle needed to get back there). ”
