No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz made his advance at the Miami Open the day some of his fellow Americans were kicked out of the Masters 1000 level tournament.
It was a tough day for both male and female host countries, and Fritz defeated Canada’s Dennis Shapovalov 7-5, 6-3 on Monday, setting up a meeting with Australia’s lucky loser Adam Walton in the 16th round.
In other men’s results, American Francis Tiafoe fell to France’s Arthur Phils 7-6 (11), 5-7, 6-2. And Riley Opelka lost 7-6 (1), 6-3 to Czech Republic’s Thomas Machuk.
Phil will face top seed Alexander Zverev in the fourth round after Germany defeated Australia’s Jordan Thompson 7-5, 6-4.
Also on Monday, Jakub Mensik topped the Roman Safiulin 6-4, 6-4, with Italy’s 29th seed Matteo Berretni defeating Belgian Zizou Bergs 6-4, 6-4
