It appears that the Philadelphia 76ers have never made a serious offer to get Quentin Grimes to re-sign him.
One of the long-running stories of this NBA offseason was Quenting Rimes’ limited free agency. Though not as dramatic as Jonathan Cuminga, Grimes has had a tough time this summer.
Last week, Quentin Grimes received a $8.7 million qualifying offer for the Philadelphia 76ers. Despite President Daryl Molly’s confidence that Grimes will return, the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.
The 76ers may have offered Grimes a $45 million deal, but they chose not to commit such money to the younger star.
And, after all, their best offer to him wasn’t even close to what Grimes was looking for. And in doing so, they may have assured him an exit for next summer.
Marc Stein and Jake Fischer have released reports on some of the final and upcoming contract extensions. As for Quentin Grimes, his situation was far more disastrous than Jonathan Cuminga.
Grimes was able to sign with the smallest amount of money. However, the 76ers chose to lowball him, offering a one-year, $9 million deal.
Instead, Grimes signed a qualifying offer $300,000 less, but comes with a no-trade clause.
“Grimes won a one-year $8.7 million qualifying offer in Philadelphia, because the Six didn’t think it was worth close to the annual salary range Grimes Camp wanted.
“The sides have said they’ve been away up until now. Philadelphia rarely had to make any kind of offers to the Grimes until the week before training camp was opened.
“There was a rather widespread belief that Philadelphia was ultimately confident that it was well profitable (in the $15 million range, for example) to waive Grimes like Cuminga to waive the right to block trade with qualifiers.
“But it is said that the Six didn’t get close to that range. The highest offer in Philadelphia’s one-year agreement came to the top with $9 million.”
If what Jake Fisher reports are accurate, the Philadelphia 76ers were clearly not seen much in Quentin Grimes.
And this decision could backfire them. The Grimes were incredible for the 76ers, and they rose to All-Star numbers after being traded with the team.
Now the 76ers have found themselves in a losing position. Losing Grimes for anything in a free agency would be a bad look.
And they won’t be able to trade the Grimes next season at least without his permission. Because his offer of eligibility comes with a no-trade clause that he must waive.
Daryl Molly finds himself in an enviable position. And frankly, it’s the position he put himself in bad decisions.
