Los Angeles right-hander Dustin May has a 4.96 ERA in the 17th start of this year. On his final five outings, May allowed 19 runners to score in 27.2 innings.
As Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell returns from the injured list stint that began in early April and paired with a recent lack of command in May, manager Dave Roberts spoke about his prospect of putting out a 27-year-old right-handed pitch from the bullpen for the first time since 2020.

“Now when he starts the second half, I think he’ll remain in the same role as the starter,” Roberts said. “I know Dustin talked about it. We gave him a little rest at some point. We don’t know if it will happen, when it will happen, when it will happen, if it will happen or if it will happen.
“The length consistency was good, but yeah, I think there should still be some performance parts too. …That’s something we keep in mind, but I think he’s a way to start the second half as a starter.”
In May, he pitched six innings in 13 of his 17 starts.
This is the first season in May from an unusual accident that ruptured the esophagus just a few days after starting a rehabilitation assignment, as well as surgery for the flexor tendon and Tommy John revision in 2023, but there will be some clear changes to the May game.
If the bullpen role is ultimately the best way to take advantage of right-handedness, it is probably not only the best for him this year, but also the best for the organization as more pitchers come back from the IL.
