Parma CEO Federico Cherubini explains that his club actually rejected a better offer this summer to allow Giovanni Leoni to join Liverpool.
The 18-year-old centre-back is due to complete his move to Liverpool, but the Reds seem to have been his dream option.
Leoni looks like a big prospect in the future, so Liverpool fans will be happy to hear how Palma actually helped him get this deal done.
According to Celvini, Parma may have accepted a more advantageous offer from Newcastle, but Leoni himself seemed particularly keen on the opportunity to join the LFC.
How Liverpool won the Giovan Nileoni Trans race
Speaking to Gazzetta di Palma, as quoted by Palma Live, Cerbini said:
“But our plans with Liverpool have changed, and I have always said that the club wants to keep Giovanni.
“We turned down an offer from Newcastle, which was an advantage over what Liverpool ultimately made.
“When Red came forward, our plans changed because the offer was so appealing and because Giovanni made it clear that he was very happy to take advantage of the opportunity.”
It was a busy summer for Liverpool. They also spent a lot of money on big names such as Alexander Isaac, Hugo Echicchike and Florian Wiltz.
Leoni was the least popular purchase, but he was going to be a really wise long-term addition to Arne Slot’s team.
Newcastle will also regret missing out on this contract.
