The Dallas Mavericks are headed for a big season in the 2025-26 season, with Anthony Davis set to become a superstar. He had to undergo ophthalmology surgery in the offseason, but he’s starting to look healthier. Prior to the campaign, he began to step up his training.
After being traded with the Dallas Mavericks in February 2025, Anthony Davis only played nine regular season games for the team. Injuries have always been a problem throughout Davis’ career, and his struggles early in his Mavericks career were not surprising.
During the offseason, he recovered completely from his injuries. Davis appeared in two play-in tournament games for the Mavericks, each. He was a standout there, especially when Memphis scored 40 points.
But he also had to deal with the problems he had with his eyes. It was bad enough that he had to undergo surgery to resolve his isolated retina.
As training camp and preseason approach, Davis’s participation in full 5-5 practice is encouraging. If the team wants to compete in a loaded Western Conference, he needs to be 100%.
Kyrie Irving is set to miss most of the season due to his brutal ACL injury, so the Mavericks need a superstar to build. As Davis is still an MVP-level player, it’s important for his team to stay healthy. This eye problem was a setback as he fully recovered from his injuries between 2024 and 25.
Thankfully, they caught this issue early, so Davis has no eye problems that bothers him. He will be able to play in the 2025-26 season as a star player and veteran leader on the frontcourt team.
Davis’ return to court this week is the first time he has been involved in game speed behavior since offseason surgery. It wasn’t the best summer for him in preparation for another tough season. However, he appears to be 100% focused on helping the Mavericks succeed.
Most people know that the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets are preseason favorites for the Western Conference. However, it is one of the most competitive areas in recent history. Maverick is not considered a candidate, but once the injury problem is over, he may reach that level.
It’s not just the team champions. He was joined by Irving and Klay Thompson. They are the veteran stars the Mavericks turn to to carry them to victory. Alongside these veterans there is a promising newcomer, Cooper Flag.
The No. 1 overall pick from the 2025 NBA Draft will soon enter a major role under Coach Jason Kidd. It’s refreshing to see #1 picks play high stakes basketball from the jump, but Flagg has all the tools to become a different maker.
With Davis on the front line, the Mavericks are a dangerous team. Not only will he be their superstar, he also serves as a mentor to Flag and leader of the locker room team.
