The Queensland government has confirmed that Brisbane’s iconic Gaba Stadium will be demolished after the 2032 Olympics. Cricket will move to a new 60,000-capacity stadium in Victoria Park, which will be built for the Olympics, according to Queensland government plans.
Gabba was the venue for several iconic Australian cricket moments. Australia’s Test matches will take place at the new stadium after the 2032 Olympics. The newly constructed venue, built in Victoria Park, will serve as the home ground for the Brisbane Lions, Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat.
Gaba will be demolished after the 2032 Olympics
Queensland Premier David Krizahurrli announced his Olympic Infrastructure Plan on Tuesday. Since being awarded the 2032 Olympics in 2021, the state has looked into multiple proposals before finalizing the future of the sporting venue.
“Gabba is at the end of his life,” said Chris Furri. “It’s not maintained well, we need a stadium to host this amazing show and we have the opportunity to play legacy.
“It became a choice between spending billions of dollars on temporary facilities and using temporary stands that didn’t deliver legacy, or securing the future of AFL (and) cricket in a new home.. ”
The Labour Government had planned to destroy and rebuild Brisbane Stadium for $2.7 billion compared to the 2032 Olympics, but was scrapped due to a public backlash against rising costs. The revised $600 million renovation plan has also been abandoned under the new government.
It’s great to see Australian cricket team win gold – David Crizafurli
Cricket will return to the Olympics at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, which last appeared in 1900. If the sport is retained for the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, matches will be held at McKay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena and Gaba.
David Chrysafluri has expressed excitement at the possibility that Australia has won Olympic gold medal in cricket at the farewell event at Brisbane Stadium.
“It would be surprising to see the Australian cricket team win gold in the Olympic finals, Gabbas’ swan.”
Australia is expected to complete the international cricket venue before 2032
Brisbane Stadium has been a historic venue since its first test in 1931. It holds 67 men’s matches and two women’s tests. The venue recently lost its position as the opening venue for Australia’s Test Summers, and Perth is scheduled to hold its first Ashes test in 2025-26. Gabba will hold its second match.
The ground future remains uncertain beyond the coming summers, but at least it is expected to host a Whiteball match and can hold Test cricket before its demolition.
Australia is expected to win another international cricket venue before 2032. There is a new stadium in Hobart and has been disassembled to be completed by 2029.
Cricket Australia announced its seven-year venue plan in 2024. This has guaranteed international equipment at Brisbane Stadium only until the next Ashes series amid ongoing discussions about redevelopment or replacement.
