Manchester City had a difficult season. The reigning champion is currently sitting sixth in the Premier League after continuing his inconsistent performance.
But it’s not only concerning their on-field shape, but the prolonged issues continue to cast shadows on the club from the pitch.
The city is still awaiting the results of an investigation into alleged violations of the Premier League’s fiscal rules.
The city was originally accused of 115 suspected Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations in early 2023, covering the 2009-2018 period.
However, following updates and explanations regarding the application of league rules over a particular season, the number reportedly increased to 130.
The Independent Committee, tasked with overseeing the case, concluded a hearing in December 2024, with a decision expected in spring 2025.
Man City verdict will be postponed until summer
According to The Telegraph, the verdict is likely to be postponed until later this year, increasing the uncertainty of the increase.
If a city is found guilty, the possibility of punishment is serious. From financial penalties and points deductions to more extreme measures such as demoting and retroactive stripping of league titles.
Despite the severity of the incident, the city is confident, and the internal belief is that the club is cleared. The calm atmosphere lasts in the boardroom and dressing room.
Man City got caught up in some legal battles
This is not the first time Manchester City has faced serious charges. In 2020, UEFA cited inadequate evidence and handed over a two-year ban from the European Congress, only to overturn it by the Court of Arbitration of Sports (CAS).
That experience only strengthens the club’s resolve. Pep Guardiola publicly supported the club and repeated his loyalty during the investigation.
Meanwhile, Erling Haaland recently violated his future with the club until 2034 after receiving a solid security from the board about the club’s future.
The Premier League isn’t the only one chasing City. La Liga President Javier Tebas recently filed a formal complaint with the European Commission, accusing the city of violating EU competition law.
The Spanish chief is seeking sanctions against the Premier League champions, escalating the fight into a wider range of legal and regulatory disputes that could affect how football clubs are governed across Europe.
For now, City continues to focus on ending the season with a strong aim to secure Champions League football this season.
But off the pitch, the clock is ticking, and all eyes are in the final verdict that can define the next chapter of Manchester City’s storied rise.
