The Los Angeles Lakers already have the center they desperately need at DeAndreaton.
The conversation surrounding this acquisition continues to generate buzz throughout the NBA community.
Many believe that Ayton can bring great success to the Lakers. His dominant performance in the 2021 Western Conference Finals remains a key reason for optimism.
However, questions remain about the $16.5 million deal over the last two years. Deandre Ayton’s career trajectory stagnated in both the Phoenix Suns and the Portland Trail Blazers, making this move a calculated gamble for the Lakers.
Former Lakers star Mycal Thompson recently shared his perspective on the acquisition and outlined four key points about the deal.
Particularly optimistic observations focus on LeBron James and Lukadon Sic, highlighting the team’s playmaking capabilities.
“No. 1, that’s great for his brand, No. 2, that’s exactly what the Lakers need.
“Third, he plays with one of the best lob throws in the game and plays with LeBron,” Thompson explained.
“Fourth, if he wants to save his career and not play at the veterinary bar for the next 10 years, he needs to come here and show everyone that he is an All-Star Caliber Center because he has that skill.”
Reports have emerged about Ayton’s behavioral issues with the Blazers, including lateness to team flights and practices and an explosion of locker rooms.
These red flags raise legitimate concerns about his professionalism. And Thompson provided a potential solution for the Lakers to address these issues head on.
“If he wants to save his career, if you want to bring in JJ Redick, Rob Perinka and LeBron, you will tell him: “Listen to your son, don’t come here with that pack. This is your last chance,” Thompson said.
Ayton production fell sharply last season. He averaged 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game for Portland.
These numbers represent notable drops from the 2019-20 campaign, which recorded 18.2 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.
The Lakers need Ayton to rediscover their previous format. If he can repeat his peak performance while embracing the franchise’s championship culture, the deal could prove to be transformative for both parties.
