The Golden State Warriors warned that the Toronto Raptors had made the same mistake as Tracy McGrady.
With the Golden State Warriors being eliminated from the 2025 NBA playoffs, it has become very clear that the franchise will need to finish the double timeline experiment.
The trio of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler are all in their 30s. Certainly Curry and Butler are still elite players, but the same cannot be said about Green.
Meanwhile, Dub has a talented young man in Jonathan Cuminga, but his development is hampered by this ongoing experiment.
Former NBA player Keyon Dooling hopes that Doub will have full trust in Kuminga, following the rocky 2024-25 season.
Despite Kuminga barely making clear about his role under manager Steve Kerr, he averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per team, with 2.2 assists.
As a result, Dooling urged the Warriors to “bet on the boy” rather than dragging the current star’s core.
“We bet on the young boy. Instead of signing and trading with Kuminga, if Draymond isn’t on that team, we’ll find more time for him.
“You change the way you play, scoring is what they need and this guy averaged 14, 15 points on a limited amount.
Green has been a warrior for 13 years and has played a key role in the four championship runs of this tenure team. However, it is clear that he has served his purpose with the team.
“When Draymond is on that team, it takes a different identity. I think Steph is getting older, Jimmy is getting older, you’re betting on the younger guys.
Hall of Fame Tracy McGrady was one of the league’s most prolific goals scorers at the height of his career. The T-Mac’s best year came as a member of the Orlando Magic for a season after the Toronto Raptors parted ways with him.
Dooling fears that unless the Warriors give the young star a few minutes of green, they will make the same mistake as Kuminga.
“It’s not coming out every day in the draft. They developed talent, developed talent, and now if they traded him, I think he’ll be like Tracy McGrady when he was traded by the Raptors.
“He’s in the cusp, if not an All-Star. He’ll be a very talented lead scorer for the NBA-type guy. He’s talented,” Dooling concluded.
Kuminga’s future is expected to be decided in the summer of 2025. Even Green knows how talented his teammates are, as he believes Kuminga will make a lot of money, regardless of where he plays.
