Smith left Wednesday’s game at the top of three innings after a foul ball hit him with his right hand in the bottom of the second. He was diagnosed with Contues on his right hand and his x-rays returned to negative. He’s off the lineup for Thursday’s series finale.
The continue to evaluate Smith before deciding whether to put him in IL. The are one of baseball’s best catchers this season, cutting .296/.405/.497 with 17 home runs, 61 RBI and .902 OPS, so they can’t afford to work quite a bit.
Soon, Dalton Rushing should start on Thursday and get an expanded look during Smith’s absence. In 43 games this season, rushing has reduced .190/.256/.293 with three home runs, 21 RBI and .549 on OPS.
Rushing deals with inconsistent play times, so it may be more consistent.
