Chris Brussard believes the New York Knicks should recently acquire a coach they’ve been with over other options.
The New York Knicks are rapidly expanding their hunt for their next head coach. After the Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau, they want a coach who can lead them to the championship.
Many names have come to mind, but the Knicks seem to be obsessed with Jason Kidd. And until recently, the Mavericks did not reject the possibility that Kid would leave.
Brian Windhorst said the Knicks could be traded for Jason Kidd. This is something the Milwaukee Bucks did a few years ago.
However, according to Chris Brussard, this plan is not something they should pursue. Rather, they should chase after the man who was on the coaching staff just before the season.
Chris Bruthard spoke to Colin Cowhard about the New York Knicks head coaching hunt. He explained that it was a terrible idea that they were approaching Ime Udoka or Jason Kidd as their first choice.
Instead, Brussard targeted Johnny Bryant, the associate head coach of the Cavaliers, who he studied under Kenny Atkinson, and pitched the Knicks, who was part of Tom Thibodeau’s coaching staff before departing for the Cavaliers.
“Look, Leon Rose doesn’t talk to media on record or off-limits, so I think he certainly has some plans that people may not know.”
“But they actually fired Thibodeau and your plan is, ‘We’re going to get Jason Kidd, we’re going to get Udoka’.” How are you going to ensure you get a coach from another team? ”
“Hopefully it wasn’t their plan A, so it’s ridiculous. Reports of Dolan being involved in this know that it doesn’t look good.”
“I don’t mind that they move out of tib. I’d never done it at this point. But I think it will work, and I think there’s a basis behind it. You have to get the right guy, and the right guy may not be the biggest name out there.”
“I like Johnny Bryant was an assistant with the Cavs this year. For four years as an assistant to the Knicks under Tib, I’ve been able to bring a system like Kenny Atkinson to the Knicks, bringing more people to the Knicks, not just one and two guys show.”
“We’ll see if they do that. He’s not famous. And if Dolan is looking for celebrities, they probably won’t go that route, but that Dolan should not be involved in this decision at all.”
Brussard denounced the Knicks’ plan to approach Udoka and Kid in a ridiculous way. But even if they ignored him, they were left out of landing any of them.
Shams Charania reported that the Knicks had recently approached the Rockets and Timberwolves to get permission to interview Imedoka and Chris Finch. Both teams turned down the Knicks.
The Knicks have not yet approached Jason Kidd, but Shams added that the Mavericks are likely to deny the Knicks either.
This means the Knicks may need to see elsewhere. Bryant may be their best option given his experience with the Knicks and recent stints from them.
But they were able to promote Rick Branson, from associate head coaches to head coaches. This also helps make their best player, Jalen Brunson happy for a long time.
Michael Malone is, of course, an option the Knicks can target. But once things stand, the Knicks aren’t taking Malone seriously.
This may be a mistake as Malone is perhaps the most successful coach at the moment, winning the NBA championship with the Denver Nuggets just two seasons ago.
It will be interesting to see who the Knicks will ultimately hire. The inability to land an already occupied head coach may be a blessing for them in the long run.
