However, the team appears to have found a solution in the bullpen: Ben Casparius.
The rookie appeared as one of the most effective pitchers in the bullpen this season. Casparius boasts a 2.93 ERA and 1.00 whip as a multi-inning reliever, primarily for the , but the right-hander could move into a familiar role in the coming weeks.
“He obviously showed up as a starter,” Roberts said. “Where we needed it, we felt that there was more value from the pen and more worth it from the multipurpose type of bailout. But where we are now, he certainly shows that he is one of five.
The starter is making his second inning in major league baseball, and injuries continue to plague the rotation. Tony Gonzolin’s latest departure, who became the 14th pitcher to land in Illinois, opened up the opportunity for Caspalius.
“I think it’s internally thinking about how others will go through this period before they return to health,” Roberts said. “What’s best for Ben, what’s best for our ball club at this moment. They’re a conversation. He’s doing whatever he wants him to.”
The rookie prefers to be a starter, and that’s the role he assumes until the bring starters like Snell, Glasnow and Emmett Sheehan back into rotation.
“Yeah, I think so,” Casparius said when asked that he likes to be a starter. “And obviously, I’ve done it for a large part of my professional career, so that’s what I feel comfortable on a daily basis. I’m just looking forward to seeing what’s going on and what’s going on next.”
