In an unusual accident, May had to undergo emergency surgery for lettuce that was held in her throat.
“There was definitely a lot of emotion,” May told Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times. “It was great to be back there.”
This spring, May, he was one of three starting pitchers competing in the final spot of the rotation. The right-hander acquired the place and had one of his best outings against the Atlanta Braves.
In May, he gave up one hit in five innings and incited six batters.
“Just knowing everything I’ve experienced over the past two years, it was a huge weight lifted off my shoulder and it was just something that relaxed,” May said. “Being able to maintain a little more level of mind throughout the lifetime has been one of my biggest things in the last six months, but I am just trying to live in the moment.
The medical emergency that endured last July could have been a much sweeter start to the 27-year-old.
May saw his teammates a few months after his surgery and after eating only the liquids he needed, he was 40 pounds lighter. He showed his wounds to the coach of his wounds (long vertical incisions of chest length) from the procedure.
“It almost looked like a heart type surgery,” Priol said of the wound. “So, to see where he is now, it’s pretty incredible.”
Although the near-death experience in May was not ideal, Hellstrial caused right-handers to grow in ways he never had.
“To see him mature and grow in his own way, he has a great professional presence around him now,” pitching coach Conor McGuinness said. “The scary thing is, I think he put some things in some perspectives for him.”
