The Los Angeles put All-Star catcher Will Smith on the injured list as the NL West division heats up. LA has retained the advantage of just 2.5 games for the San Diego Padres, depending on the current situation.
Manager Dave Roberts insisted that “there is no sufficient improvement” in Smith’s hands, particularly after Triple A catcher Chuckie Robinson was reportedly with the San Francisco team on Saturday.

After hitting his hand with a foul ball earlier this month, Smith was on the sidelines for six days before returning to the lineup on Tuesday. After scratching from Wednesday’s lineup, the moment he went before the first pitch, Roberts offered the latest in his backstop.
“It’s still there. I don’t feel good,” Roberts said. “I’m getting better every day, but still not 100%.
“I think the swelling went away just by feeling after his first game (Tuesday) and every test we came out in negative terms… I thought we were in a better place,” Roberts said. “But at least there’s an improvement every day.”
The ‘ other catch option, the Rookie Dalton Rush, came down just three days after Smith went. He has been on the injured list since September 6th.
This leaves things behind in Ben Rothventz and now Robinson’s deadline deal.
Robinson has not yet played in the major leagues this season, but has hit .261 with an OPS of .698 for the Los Angeles Angels and Triple-A affiliate.
In a short stint in LA, Rortvedt holds it down with above average framing feature and does his best to hit .294 in the final seven games of the defending champion.
