Stephen Thompson has not worked on the controversial jury at the UFC Nashville co-main event, but the shin injuries he suffered in the fight are worse than expected.
Thompson was at the wrong end of his split decision to Gabriel Bonfim at the UFC Fight Night event at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday. In the second round, “Wonderboy” checked the leg kick by Bonfim and quickly opened his shin. A few seconds later, Thompson used the same shin to injure Bonfim with a head kick, but was unable to clean up the opponent.
Thompson issued a statement via Twitter after the game, saying his shins are “divided into bones” that require stitching.
Nashville you’re amazing! To my fans, I love y’all!! Thank you for your love and support ❤️
Pop, thank you for always being in my corner, love you!

“Well, I have to come back and heal my sipping and condition more insanely, but I love you guys,” Thompson said at the end of the video.
Thompson, 42, is currently the oldest fighter on the roster, but still plays to a high level. Despite sitting on the three-game skid, Thompson gave surgent contender Joaquin Buckley a tough fight before finally halting at UFC 307 last October. Prior to that, Thompson was submitted by the undefeated Shabkat Rakmonov.
In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Thompson revealed that one fight remains in his current contract, following UFC Nashville. How will that final contractual match be formed as he continues to compete?
