Daniel Cormier and Chale Sonnen respond head-on as coaches The ultimate fighter 33 Flyweight final.
Former UFC fighter Joseph Morales (USA) is one step closer to his second chance with a narrow divisional victory over Imanor Rodriguez (Mexico). TUF 33 In the finale, he faces Team Kolmier’s Alibidris (Kazakhstan).
Team Sonnen’s first flyweight pick, Morales needed every ounce of veteran experience to hold back the hard-charged Rodriguez. He used wrestling to neutralize Rodriguez in the opening round, but Rodriguez showed increased takedown defense and aggression in the second round of the razor closure. Rodriguez’s boxing gave him an edge early in round two, but only to find himself on the defense as Morales came late in the period with his own strike.
The third round went down Rodriguez’s path, showing his own grappling expertise, working on Morales to the ground, and heavy on his back for most of the last five minutes. Rodriguez and Morales both secured one round and are the winners in the middle term.
Eventually, Morales came out at the end of the split call victory. Morales has already placed three UFC appearances under his belt, including a submission that won a bonus for Roberto Sanchez in 2017. He parted ways with Promotion in 2018, and has not fought again until 2021, and has now won three wins.
This season’s fight remains to determine who faces Rodrigo Sezinand (Brazil) in the welterweight final. Next week, Team Cormier’s Daniil Donchenko (Ukraine) will face Matt Dixon (USA) of Team Sonnen.
