Freeman barely responded after hitting the pitch. Instead, I walked towards the dugout and entered the clubhouse. The quickly provided the first basehand update.
Freeman was missing 10 weeks after being hit by a 94 mph heater as a member of the Atlanta Braves in 2017 when he destroyed his left wrist and was hit by a 94 mph heater.
On Sunday, Freeman was attacked by a 88 mph sinker from veteran brewer Jose Quintana.
The first baseman had a hot start this season. I managed to hit .369 with 1.060 in the OPS in the first 50 games, but it’s been pretty cool ever since. In his final 36 games, Freeman had just hit .191 with 42 strikeouts.
Freeman still has one of his average exit speeds in baseball when he ranks in the 74th percentile across qualified batters at an average of 91.2 mph. Last season, Freeman hit just 15.7% (suitable for the 84th percentile in MLB), but this season, that number has grown to a strikeout rate of 22.5%.
Hitting Freeman’s pitch hopes not to keep him out for a long time, but more tests will be run before the team offers a more decisive update.
