While there may be all eyes in the bid tomorrow evening to book their location in the Europa League final, in the long run, it is the summer transfer window that can prove the maker or destruction of the Reuben Amorim administration.
United’s hierarchy must balance the Portuguese with passing the right tools to the professional 3-4-3 system.
While the move by Noussair Mazraoui ranks as one of the club’s most recent successes in capture, we need to look back at the arrival of Bruno Fernandez in 2020 and see an overwhelmingly positive deal at Old Trafford.
As club legend Gary Neville said late last year, the playmaker was the “only” player of the post-seal’s Alex Ferguson era and lived up to expectations.
The INEOS era needs to begin improving this miserable recent record. Perhaps United’s lowest decline came before the acquisition, in the form of an additional shock for Weghorst.
Weghorst’s record at Man Utd
All the complications and controversies surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s second spell at Old Trafford – in particular, an explosive bomb interview with the striker and an interview with Piers Morgan – it still represents a key shock downgrade to replace the free scoring icon with that guy weghorst.
Prior to the 2022 World Cup, Ronaldo left in overwhelming conditions, forcing 10 hugs and Co to immerse themselves in the market for new strikers in January, especially amid continuing injuries to Anthony Marshall.
Winter window options were of course limited. The Premier League side was ultimately forced to pick Wegrust from his loan spell at Besiktas, scoring just two goals the previous year for Burnley.
Towering Dutch International was cruelly laughed at as the “worst player” to play for Manchester United in the controversial verdict of broadcaster Richard Keys, but he enjoyed a strange bright moment.
The experienced marksman, sometimes at 10 stops, approaching the net in a 2-2 draw break with Barcelona at Camp Nou.
However, these restrictions were exposed by modest returns from just two goals and three assists in 31 matches in all competitions during the six-month stint at Manchester.
For players that many people mostly expected, Weghorst has been a pop-up with at least some moments cherished. The opposite applies to one of the things in Amorim’s current crops.
Man UTD Star at risk looking worse than Weghorst
On the striker’s front, question marks continue to surround both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. That said, for Hozilund, the younger Dane finished at least last season as United’s top scorer in all competitions last season, while Jilky scored seven times in his club’s injury debut campaign.
Both men, as expected given the transfer fees of £64 million and £36.5 million respectively — easily overturned the involvement of five goals that Weghorst choked up, but the same cannot be said about Mason Mount, the man who arrived with Hojlund in 2023.
The British initially looked like a coup as they were signed by rival Chelsea on a £55 million deal that summer and only had a year left in an existing contract at Stamford Bridge.
The player who provided the match-winning assists in the 2021 Champions League final reached double digits in both goals and assists in the 2021/22 Premier League, with Mount arriving in Manchester in true pedigree. As 10 HAGs stated at the time, he is a “quality player.”
Sadly, for all involved, Marquee’s move has been a disaster so far, with the latest versatility that seems to have hit the club’s infamous No. 7 curse.
Whether he simply was squeezed by taking on such an iconic jersey at the Theatre of Dreams, things have never really progressed to Mount before.
Even when he featured, the former Derby County lender didn’t appear to nail his regular role for himself as his 3-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao was suing in that era.
Introduced from the bench alongside United and wanting to see things in comfortable fashion, Mount gave a volatile and enthusiastic performance in the closing stage, losing the ball from just 23 touches to seven times, picking up unnecessary yellow cards.
That’s to his credit, he followed a goal against Brentford to open up scoring over the weekend, but even that strike couldn’t overturn his tough returns and now he only scored twice, so he’s only contributed one assist in 41 games so far – two goals and assists over Weghorst.

Statistics through the Transfer Market |
It may seem tough to compare Mount to Weghorst, but given the latter’s status as a striker, the former has little success, but is run primarily as 10th in the Amorim administration. As mentioned earlier, Weghorst also worked in that role under Ten Hag.
Considering the substantial nature of Mount’s price tag, according to TransferMarkt, it is difficult to consider his capture as anything other than a flop, considering it is the 10th highest in United’s history.
While Amorim still seems to have enough faith in the player he described as the “proper footballer,” it appears that Matthews Cunya is about to arrive this summer, but competition on the sides only increases amid reports that Mount himself could be in the middle of his own.
Hopefully, for both him and United, Cobham Academy graduates can play a key role in clinching the glory of the Europa League…
