Demetrious Johnson believes Tom Aspinall has one major advantage over Jon Jones.
So far, “Bones” have been a perfect 2-0 in heavyweight run under the UFC banner, losing last November after quickly submitting to Ciryl Gane in March 2023, then breaking two title holder Stipe Miocic.
But there’s one fact that, as Jones saw in these two outings, is undeniable. John Jones is slow at heavyweight.
It could prove to be a great advantage for aspinel when the two inevitably step into the octagon.
“John Jones’ intelligence and versatility make him great, but he’s slower at heavyweight than the light heavyweight,” Johnson said in an interview with Submission Radio. Tom Aspinall is younger, faster, bigger. It could be an interesting battle. But waiting six months for John might not be ideal for Tom. Maintaining activity is important for young fighters. ”
Tom Aspinoll defends the interim title awaiting John Jones
Aspinall has been the interim heavyweight champion in promotion since winning a 69-second knockout at UFC 295 in November 2023 against Sergei Pavlovich. Since then, Britt has been lobbying hard for a unified clash with the “bone” but so far nothing has been announced.
Aspinall chose to defend his interim belt last year against Curtis Blaydes in Manchester. It only took 60 seconds to finish “Razor.”
There have been some promising updates from both Dana White and Aspinall regarding the much-anticipated showdown, but fans are frustrated by the delay. Furthermore, after claiming that Jones wanted to train for at least six months to fight aspinol.
