Wimbledon two-time champion Petra Kvitova retired from professional tennis at the US Open on Monday, calling for the time of his career, winning 31 titles worldwide.
The 35-year-old Czech, who won Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014 and reached the second-place career-high ranking, was beaten 6-1, 6-0 by France’s Diane Parry in the first round in New York, and fought back tears as she hugged her husband and coach Girivanek after the match.
“I was hoping to do a better show today,” Kvitova said in an on-court interview. “But it was tough to know that it could be my last match, and emotionally, it was very hard.
“Thank you, New York for this incredible Grand Slam. I’m so happy to be here for my last dance.”
The Czech reached another major final at the 2019 Australia Open, and after returning to tour in 2017, she returned just six months after she needed surgery to save her career in her left hand after fighting an intruder she shoved into her home.
Kvitova gave birth to her first child in July 2024 and returned to tour this March.
