UFC champion Alexander Volkanovski and his coach have Movsar Evloev earned the next title shot.
Volkanovski (27-5 MMA, 14-4 UFC) regained his featherweight title when he defeated Diego Lopez (27-6 MMA, 6-1 UFC) by unanimous decision in Saturday’s UFC 314 main event at Kaseya Center in Miami.
Volkanovski head coach Joe Lopez knows Evloev’s (19-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) strong grappling skills, but thinks his star student is too strong for him.
“I think he’s a good wrestler, but he’s not – what do you call him? “I think that’s what I’ll make him boring… so he’s hanging from them, and I don’t think he can stick with Volk. Volk is so strong, his scrambling skills, and his jiu-jitsu and wrestling are on a different level.
“So we have Diego. Diego has pretty good security guards. The way he switches from armbar to triangle sweep, he’s very good. He has a really good repertoire there. He wants to be with Alex on top of him. Alex feels like he’s heavyweight on top of you.
The undefeated contender hopes that the new champion will live up to his promise as Volkanovski has pledged to win the Lopes and take on Evloev.
“Congratulations on your amazing performance, you are a true champion! So let’s see what your words are worth! @Alexvolkanovski #ufc314. ”
