Anthony Hernandez brought drama to the UFC Vegas 109 weighing.
Hernandez, half of Saturday’s middleweight main event, surpassed the limits of a non-title match (including a pound of allowance) at 186.5 pounds in his first attempt at official weigh-in on Friday. His opponent, Roman Drizze, weighed at 185.5 pounds.
Hernandez weighed in the first hour, so he was eligible for a second weighting on clearance from the committee. Hernandez reappeared in the second hour and scored the mark at 186 pounds.
The other two fighters missed weight in their first attempt. Bantamweight Jocelyn Edwards (136.25) and flyweight Julija Storialenko (126.25). For Edwards and Storialenko, the problem of amputation is not new, but they successfully exploited a second attempt to break the scale with both fighters using the extra time allowed to shave a quarter-pound.
Steve Elseg, the challenger for one-time flyweight title, will also make his UFC bantamweight debut and will be taking on Ode Osbourne, a 125-pound competitor who has been intervening in Saturday’s joint main event in a short period of time.
