Manchester United is one of several European giants who have shown serious interest in signing Dayot Upamecano from Bayern Munich.
According to Fichajes, the French centre-back contract is expected to expire in the summer of 2026, raising him to the main target of clubs looking for top-quality defenders.
Upamecano has been a key figure in Bavaria since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021. During their time in Munich, they helped Bayern win several Bundesliga titles and a domestic Super Cup.
He was generally a mainstay, but talks on renewal of his contract have stagnated. He reportedly earns around 16 million euros a year and is seeking wage increases to sign the extension.
Bayern Munich’s decision could support Mann United
However, it appears that Bayern is reluctant to break existing wage structures. This opens the door for other clubs interested in signing him.
Manchester United is not alone. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also reportedly taking part in a race to sign up for Upamecano.
Real Madrid is looking for defensive reinforcements, especially if they have players sent to the defensive forces. Upamecano is a compelling option given his experience and quality.
PSG is also taking part in the race to sign the French defender. They probably see him as someone who can fit into their defense along with existing leaders.
The Red Devils are looking for more defensive depths
If United are serious, they may aim to negotiate before contracting with Upamecano from January 2026, allowing him to take part in the free summer move.
United may want to sign him, but Real Madrid or PSG may retain more appeal in terms of Champions League success, fame, or domestic advantages, depending on the league’s competition.
Convincing Upamecano to choose United over these clubs could be challenging, assuming he is making a serious offer.
