West Ham United began the season in a 3-0 loss to newly promoted Sunderland.
Not only did Graham Potter and his team look poor in the game, but their outlook for the season is not encouraging.
Hammer strengthened the team this summer, but it appears their transfer business hasn’t finished.
El Hadji Malick Diouf, Mads Hermansen, Kyle Walker-Peters and Callum Wilson are the high-profile signatures they made this summer.
Will West Ham defender Emerson Palmieri leave?
However, one of their first team players could be on their way out of the club in the final days of their transfer period.
According to Foot Mercato journalist Sebastien Denis, League One’s Marseille has emerged as a name that West Ham’s fullback has been considered as the French club is trying to bolster defensive options.
For West Ham manager Graham Potter, Emerson’s potential departure presents with an unwanted headache.
Emerson has not always been a guaranteed starter, but his experience and reliability have been a major asset to Hammer.
Losing him could result in the Hammer returning to another left-back market. This is a situation where there is a risk of already limited resources growing when other parts of the team demand urgent strengthening.
Graham Potter needs to sign his replacement
Currently, Emerson is one of the team’s few senior natural left-back options. If necessary, the Kyle Walker Peter can operate on the left side, but his natural position is on the other side.
Emerson’s exit therefore leaves West Ham with a lack of depth and causes the club to reshuffle defensive responsibility so that Potter is reluctant to sanction.
But for Marseille, the prospect of landing an experienced European Championship-winning defender of Premier League pedigree is naturally appealing.
Even for Emerson, prospects for playing in the Champions League with the Marseille may prove difficult to refuse.
