Anthony Davis has a lot of experience playing for Frank Vogel with the La Lakers.
The Dallas Mavericks are very serious about their new season. After the Turbulent 2024-25 Campaign, the Mavericks have done a lot this season.
The first big step was to draft Cooper Flag with the first overall pick. Flag is set to be the future of the franchise.
But the next step was to sign Kyrie Irving a three-year, $119 million extension. Irving won’t be able to play for most of next season, so the Mavericks needed another point guard to fill out.
So Dallas went outside and signed Dangelo Russell. It is clear that the Mavericks have plans to compete for the championship this season.
To further help them, they signed former LA Lakers head coach Frank Vogel to become an assistant. Vogel, the fans remember, was the head coach of the Lakers’ Anthony Davis, who won the championship.
In January 2020, both Frank Vogel and Anthony Davis’ first season with the La Lakers, ESPN featured head coach stints with the team.
Davis had a lot of positive things about Vogel’s coaching style and how he managed to maintain his motivation to not get carried away.
“Every day, Frank wins and loses with the same attitude. It’s not too expensive or too low. I love his coaching. I love his coaching style.
“What impressed me the most is that he keeps us accountable even when we win. When I see the team ride LeBron or me, others respect him more and know that they are responsible too.”
Frank Vogel is not just a familiar face with Anthony Davis. During his stay with the Lakers Jason Kidd was one of his assistant coaches.
Kidd had gained a negative reputation as head coach after a stint with the Brooklynnett and the Milwaukee Bucks.
However, Vogel still had a chance for Kidd and admitted that he wanted not only to coaches with experience in the position, but also to the former player coach.
“I can’t have four video guys on staff. The right complement for me was a respected former player who always had coaching experience.
“But you can’t have the idea that you’re going to look over your shoulder — you need firepower from your staff.”
When the two were together on the coaching staff the last time they led the team to the NBA Championship. The Mavericks hope to be able to repeat the same magic tricks this season.
