Austin Reeves and JJ Redick liked what they saw from Marcus Smart during Los Angeles Lakers practice, and it will be very important for their season.
One of the Los Angeles Lakers’ best moves this offseason was the acquisition of former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart.
Luka Doncic helped bring Marcus Smart to the Lakers this summer. In fact, the All-Star guard personally contacted him and convinced him to sign with the team.
JJ Redick has long admired Marcus Smart and would be happy to acquire a star with a great defense and playoff experience.
Smart could be a replacement for Alex Caruso, a solid offensive point defender the Lakers have been missing for a long time. But it’s another aspect of his game that has impressed his teammates and coaches.
Austin Reeves spoke to reporters after the LA Lakers’ latest practice session. When talking about facing Marcus Smart, Reeves was in awe of what he saw.
Reaves sees the characteristic intensity on the defensive end after being guarded smartly and thinks that will be key for the Lakers next season.
In addition to that, Smart’s experience and communication also impressed the young guard.
“He guarded me a little bit in the first practice. I can still feel that pressure and intensity that he brings to the defensive end. That’s going to be big for us. We need that.”
“We need him to be the best version of himself, especially with the communication he brings defensively.
“He’s been in the league for a while and knows how to win at the highest level. We’re very excited to have him.”
Austin Reeves wasn’t the only member of the Los Angeles Lakers to take notice of Marcus Smart’s strength. JJ Redick praised the former All-Defensive Team guard’s way of sustaining his energy.
“He was great. Considering the workload today, I was impressed that he was able to maintain the level of intensity he had.”
Smart gives the Lakers a unique and important dynamic off the bench. They haven’t had an on-ball defender of his caliber off the bench on their roster since Alex Caruso left in 2021.
On top of that, Smart has significant playoff experience and even played in the NBA Finals a few years ago. If he can get back to his best form, the Lakers could have a nice, well-rounded team next season.
As it stands, JJ Redick has a preference for the Lakers’ starting lineup, so Smart will likely come off the bench. However, with some impressive performances, Smart could earn a starting role right away.
