Is there anyone who is happy with Merab Dvalishvili vs. Sean O’Malley Rematch?
Earlier this week, Dana White dropped several bombs on social media. These include the shocking headlining at UFC Kansas City and Kayla Harrison’s first shot at the women’s bantamweight championship. However, there was one announcement that fight fans would scratch their heads.
On Saturday, June 7th, “Sugar” Sean O’Malley returns to the Octagon for a rematch with Merab Dvalishvili, the man who abandoned the 135-pound title in September.
Needless to say, no one was enthusiastic.
The UFC was accused of not giving fans what they want in the Merab vs. O’Malley rematch
Dvalishvili was absolutely dominated O’Malley in his first meeting at UFC 306. So fans were convinced that “Sugar” would have to return and get another victory in the Division before justifying the rematch. Obviously, the matchmaker didn’t see it that way.
MMA interviewer and journalist James Lynch expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision, offering his views on the somewhat controversial booking.
“This fight is another example of how the UFC doesn’t give fans what they want and show no long-term lack of plans,” Lynch said on his YouTube channel. “The first battle between Sean O’Malley and Merab wasn’t nearby. Melba was in control. Why are we undergoing a rematch? It feels like the UFC is banking the bank not merit but O’Malley’s popularity.”
To be fair, it sounds like Sean O’Malley is having a rematch with the “machine” much more seriously than the first meeting. “Sugar” revealed that he had stopped smoking marijuana and gave up on social media in order to focus on combat. O’Malley also informed that he doesn’t have one “J’d The Peen” in 2025.
