Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend the funeral of his former teammate Diogo Jota today, in order to not be distracted from the event.
Former Liverpool and Portuguese forward Jota tragically passed away this week at the age of 28 in a car accident along with his younger brother Andre.
The pair are buried today in the small town of Gondomar, and the Daily Mirror claims they were wary of Ronaldo’s attendance.
The Al Nassr superstar is such a big name that it could have possibly caused distress to Jota’s family and friends if his presence was drawn to more crowds, journalists and photographers.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s homage to Diogo Jota
Ronaldo and Jota won the Nations League with Portugal’s national team earlier this summer. The former Manchester United man paid tribute to his old international colleagues on social media shortly after the sad news broke on Thursday.
He writes:
“To your family, your wife, and your children, I express my pathetic dol and wish them all the strength of the world. I know you will always be with them. Peace, Diogo, Andre. We all miss you.”
Liverpool players will attend Diogo Jota’s funeral
Liverpool players like Virgil Van Dijk, Curtis Jones and Andrew Robertson were present at today’s service as they bid farewell to their teammates and friends.
The news has shocked the world of football, and it must be particularly painful for Liverpool fans who watch him play every week, and his teammates who have known him for years.
CatedOffside’s idea is with all of his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.
