Almost seven years after the UFC 229 showdown, Khabib Nurmagomedov still has no name to say Conor McGregor.
They fought only once, but the fierce rivalry between Nurmagomedov and McGregor is one of the most intense in UFC history. When looking back at the iconic feud during the interview, “Eagle” still doesn’t say the Irish name.
Recently, Nurmagomedov’s friend and former training partner Daniel Cormier provided insight into how much hatred can grow between two of MMA’s biggest stars.
“He still doesn’t say (McGregor’s) name today,” Kolmier said of Club Shea Shea Nurmagomedov. “He hasn’t said his name yet. He hasn’t said his name yet. Last week he interviewed him in New York and said, ‘This guy.’ He never says his name. They are in the Octagon. Khabib said, “No, it’s not.” You don’t ruin them, man.
“He was about to kill him. He was trying to put him to sleep. He was holding him and said, “I kicked your ass. I kicked your ass.” He then jumped over the fence and tried to defeat his team. But he had no intention of letting him go.
Nurmagomedov eventually came to the top and suffocated McGregor in October 2018 to maintain the UFC Lightweight Championship.
Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor’s postwar battle
Shortly after the fight, Nurmagomedov jumped over the Octagon fence and chased after McGregor’s former BJJ coach, Dillon Danis. The incident sparked postwar war brawls, both inside and outside the cage.
Nurmagomedov received a nine-month suspension and a $500,000 fine for his role in the case, while McGregor received a six-month suspension and a $50,000 fine for his role in the case.
